Binyavanga Wainaina, one of Africa's most acclaimed writers, published a lost chapter from his memoir titled 'I Am a Homosexual, Mum' — publicly coming out as gay. The announcement sent shockwaves across Africa, where homosexuality is criminalised in over 30 countries. Wainaina, who had won the Caine Prize for African Writing in 2002 and was named one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in 2014, deliberately chose to come out in the context of escalating anti-LGBTQ+ legislation across the continent, including Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Act.
