The New York Daily News ran the front-page headline 'Ex-GI Becomes Blonde Beauty' reporting that George William Jorgensen Jr., a former US Army soldier, had undergone gender-affirming surgery in Denmark and was now Christine Jorgensen. The story became an international sensation and made Jorgensen one of the most famous people in America. Rather than retreating from public life, Jorgensen embraced her celebrity, becoming a nightclub entertainer, actress, and outspoken advocate for transgender people for the rest of her life.
