Northern Ireland's first Pride was held in Belfast in August 1991, timed to the 20th anniversary of the Campaign for Homosexual Law Reform (NI), founded in 1971. A few hundred people marched from Chichester Street to Custom House Square, and an accompanying "Olympics-style" festival offered sports, a one-act play and discussions. No further Pride was held until the festival returned in 1998, after which Belfast Pride has run annually.
Impact & Significance
Northern Ireland's first Pride event brought vital visibility to the LGBTQ+ community in a region shaped by conservative traditions and sectarian divisions. It demonstrated that the movement for equality was truly nationwide.
