ILGA Becomes First LGBTQ+ Organisation to Gain UN Consultative Status
ECOSOC (the United Nations Economic and Social Council) voted to grant the International Lesbian and Gay Association consultative status, making ILGA the first international LGBTQI+ organisation to achieve this recognition. The United States and 21 other ECOSOC members voted in favour. However, the status was suspended in September 1994 following a political controversy exploited by US Senator Jesse Helms. ILGA World would not regain its ECOSOC status until July 2011, making the saga one of the most contested NGO accreditation cases in UN history, spanning nearly 20 years.
