Boudicca — Warrior Queen Defies Roman Gender Expectations

Boudicca (also known as Boadicea), queen of the Iceni tribe in East Anglia, led a massive uprising against the Roman Empire after her kingdom was annexed, she was flogged, and her daughters assaulted. She commanded an army of over 100,000 that destroyed the Roman settlements at Colchester, London, and St Albans. Roman historians recorded their shock that a woman could lead such a formidable military campaign, reflecting how profoundly she defied their rigid gender expectations.
