Frida Kahlo — Mexico's Iconic Bisexual Artist

Frida Kahlo died in Mexico City aged 47, leaving behind a body of work that would make her one of the most recognised artists of the twentieth century. Kahlo was openly bisexual in an era when this was deeply taboo, even in bohemian Mexico City. Her affairs with women included relationships with Josephine Baker, dancer Josephine Marín, and photographer Nickolas Muray's partner. Her intensely personal paintings explored identity, gender, class, race, and post-colonialism through surrealist and folk art traditions. Kahlo's famous self-portraits confronted pain, disability, and desire with unflinching honesty.
