Pier Paolo Pasolini — Italian Filmmaker and Poet Murdered

Pier Paolo Pasolini, one of Italy's most important post-war intellectuals, was brutally murdered on a beach in Ostia, near Rome. He was 53. Pasolini was openly gay throughout his career — an extraordinary act of courage in mid-century Italy — and his homosexuality was central to the persecution he faced. He was tried for obscenity, expelled from the Communist Party, and subjected to relentless public hostility. Despite this, he produced an extraordinary body of work as a poet, novelist, journalist, and filmmaker. His films, including The Gospel According to St. Matthew, Teorema, and Salò, challenged political power, consumer capitalism, and sexual hypocrisy.
