Laurel Hubbard First Openly Trans Woman to Compete in Individual Olympic Event

New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard became the first openly transgender woman to compete in an individual event at the Summer Olympics, entering the women's +87kg weightlifting at the Tokyo Games. Hubbard, who transitioned in 2013 at age 35, did not advance after failing to record a successful lift. She acknowledged the crowd with a heart gesture, and the New Zealand Olympic Committee supported her selection throughout.
