Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky — Death of a Tormented Genius

Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky died in St Petersburg aged 53, just nine days after the première of his Sixth Symphony ('Pathétique'). Throughout his life, Tchaikovsky struggled with his homosexuality in a deeply hostile society. He entered a disastrous marriage in 1877 to deflect rumours, which lasted only weeks before he suffered a breakdown. His passionate letters to his nephew Vladimir 'Bob' Davydov reveal deep emotional attachments to men. Despite his inner turmoil, Tchaikovsky composed some of the most beloved music in the Western canon — Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, the 1812 Overture, and his six symphonies.
