Dr James Barry — Military Surgeon's Secret Revealed After Death

Dr James Barry, one of the most distinguished military surgeons in the British Army, died in London. Barry had served for over 46 years across the British Empire, performed one of the first successful Caesarean sections in Africa, improved conditions for soldiers and prisoners, and risen to the rank of Inspector General. After death, the charwoman who laid out the body discovered that Barry had been assigned female at birth — a fact that had remained hidden throughout an entire military career.
