Stonewall UK Formed

Founded in 1989 by prominent figures including Sir Ian McKellen, Michael Cashman and Lisa Power, Stonewall UK was established as a direct response to the introduction of Section 28. It quickly became the leading advocacy organisation for LGBTQ+ rights in the UK.

Pride Event Name Changed to LGBT Pride

The annual London Pride event was renamed "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride" in 1996, after a vote by the members of the Pride Trust carried overwhelmingly. The renaming formally acknowledged bisexual and transgender communities alongside lesbian and gay ones, and that year's event on Clapham Common drew over 200,000 people, making it Europe's largest free music festival.

Stonewall Awards Launched

In 2006, Stonewall launched its annual awards ceremony to recognise outstanding individuals and organisations who have made significant contributions to advancing LGBT equality. The awards celebrate achievements across politics, media, business, and public life that have helped drive forward legal and social change.
