Yogyakarta Principles on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity

Twenty-nine distinguished international human rights experts from 25 countries gathered at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia and drafted 29 principles on applying international human rights law to sexual orientation and gender identity. Launched publicly at a Geneva event on 26 March 2007 and presented at the United Nations in New York on 7 November 2007, the Yogyakarta Principles became the authoritative framework for understanding how existing international law protects LGBTQ+ people. A supplementary set of principles — the Yogyakarta Principles Plus 10 (YP+10) — was adopted in 2017, adding protections relating to sex characteristics and intersex bodily integrity.
