Brunei Implements Death by Stoning for Gay Sex

Provisions of Brunei's Syariah Penal Code prescribing death by stoning for sodomy came into force. Following intense international condemnation and celebrity-led boycotts of the Sultan's luxury hotels, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah announced on 5 May 2019 that an existing moratorium on the death penalty would extend to cover the new code. The law remains on the books but is not enforced.

Highlighted the extreme end of anti-LGBTQ+ criminalisation globally, sparking a global solidarity response and raising awareness of the death penalty for homosexuality in multiple countries.
