ILGA Publishes First Global Intersex Legal Mapping Report
ILGA World published its inaugural Intersex Legal Mapping Report, covering all 193 UN member states. The report found that 181 states (94%) had made no sufficient legal attempt to protect intersex bodily integrity. Only six UN member states — Germany, Greece, Iceland, Malta, Portugal, and Spain — had laws prohibiting unnecessary medical interventions on intersex minors, and only Greece and Malta had specific sanctions for violations. Just seven states had anti-discrimination protections explicitly based on sex characteristics.
Impact & Significance
The report provided the first comprehensive global baseline for intersex legal protections, revealing that the vast majority of the world's nations have no legal framework to protect intersex people from non-consensual medical procedures — galvanising advocacy for reform.
