Norway Bans All Forms of Conversion Therapy

International Legal

The Norwegian Storting voted 85-15 to ban conversion therapy in all settings including medical, psychotherapeutic, alternative medicine, and religious contexts. The law imposes up to three years' imprisonment (six years for serious violations) regardless of age or consent. It also criminalises marketing of conversion therapy and applies extraterritorially to Norwegian citizens abroad.

Impact & Significance

One of the most comprehensive conversion therapy bans globally, covering all settings including religious contexts — an area many other countries' laws had struggled to address.
