Russia Declares 'International LGBT Movement' Extremist Organisation

Discrimination International Legal

Russia's Supreme Court ruled in a closed hearing, with no defence present, to designate the 'international LGBT movement' as an extremist organisation. Under the ruling, 'participants' face up to five years in prison and 'organisers' up to ten; individuals can be placed on an extremist list with frozen bank accounts. Amnesty International called it 'a shameful and absurd decision' with 'catastrophic consequences'.

Impact & Significance

The most extreme anti-LGBTQ+ legal measure by a major world power, effectively criminalising LGBTQ+ identity itself in Russia.
