Iraq Passes Anti-LGBT Law

The Iraqi parliament passed amendments to the Anti-Prostitution Law that criminalised same-sex relations with penalties of up to 15 years imprisonment. The law also criminalised the promotion of homosexuality, transgender identity, and any attempt to change biological sex, with penalties of up to 7 years.

Impact & Significance

Drew widespread international condemnation from human rights organisations and further restricted the already precarious situation for LGBTQ+ people in Iraq, driving many further underground.
