LASPO Act Extends Hate Crime Sentencing to Transgender Identity
The Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 added transgender identity to UK hate crime sentencing provisions. Section 65(9) doubled the sentencing starting point for murders motivated by hostility on grounds of transgender identity to 30 years, bringing it into line with other hate crime categories and extending Section 146 of the Criminal Justice Act 2003.
