Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old gay student at the University of Wyoming, was beaten, tortured, and tied to a fence near Laramie on the night of 6 October 1998. He was found 18 hours later and died in hospital on 12 October without regaining consciousness. The case became a catalyst for federal hate crime legislation and galvanised the LGBTQ+ community against anti-gay violence worldwide.
Impact & Significance
Shepard's murder became a defining moment in the fight for hate crime protections, ultimately leading to the federal Matthew Shepard Act in 2009.
