North Carolina Enacts HB2 'Bathroom Bill'

Governor Pat McCrory signed the Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act (HB2), requiring people to use public bathrooms matching the sex on their birth certificate. Passed in a single-day special session, the law triggered nationwide boycotts costing North Carolina over $400 million in lost business, contributed to McCrory losing re-election, and set the template for a wave of anti-trans bills across the US. The bathroom provision was repealed in March 2017.
