Pakistan Passes Transgender Persons Protection Act with Self-ID

Pakistan enacted the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, providing legal recognition based on self-perceived gender identity. Individuals can change their gender in the National Database without medical intervention. The law also prohibits discrimination in education, employment, healthcare, and housing, and recognises rights to property inheritance, voting, and public office. The law followed a 2010 Supreme Court declaration that transgender people are equal citizens.

Impact & Significance

Demonstrated that gender self-ID legislation could be enacted across diverse cultural and religious contexts, making Pakistan one of the most legally progressive countries in South Asia for transgender rights.
