First World AIDS Day Observed

The first World AIDS Day was held on 1 December 1988, established by the World Health Organization following a London summit attended by 140 countries. It was the first-ever international day dedicated to a global health issue. At the time, an estimated 90,000 to 150,000 people were infected with HIV worldwide. World AIDS Day continues to be observed annually, raising awareness and commemorating those lost.
