First World AIDS Day Observed

The first World AIDS Day was held on 1 December 1988, established by the World Health Organization following a London summit attended by 140 countries. It was the first-ever international day dedicated to a global health issue. By March 1988, 136 countries or territories had reported a total of 84,256 AIDS cases to the World Health Organization. World AIDS Day continues to be observed annually, raising awareness and commemorating those lost.
