First Official Report of AIDS in the United States
Health
The US Centers for Disease Control published a report describing cases of Pneumocystis pneumonia in five previously healthy young gay men in Los Angeles — the first official documentation of what would become known as AIDS. By December 1981, 337 cases of severe immune deficiency had been reported across the US, marking the beginning of a pandemic that would claim over 40 million lives worldwide.
