Princess Diana Opens the Broderip HIV Ward

Health Cultural UK

Diana, Princess of Wales, opened the Broderip Ward at Middlesex Hospital, the UK's first dedicated ward for people with HIV. Her highly visible contact with patients helped challenge public fear and the false belief that HIV could be transmitted through ordinary touch.

Impact & Significance

The visit became one of the most powerful anti-stigma moments of the UK AIDS crisis, linking clinical care with public compassion at a time when people living with HIV were often treated with fear and isolation.
