Terrence Higgins Trust Founded
After Terry Higgins died from an AIDS-related illness in July 1982, his partner and friends created the organisation that became Terrence Higgins Trust. It became the first UK charity set up in response to the HIV epidemic, formally developing into a charity providing information, support, education and advocacy.
Impact & Significance
Terrence Higgins Trust personalised and humanised AIDS at a time of fear and hostility, and became a central part of the UK's community response to HIV through support services, safer-sex education and public campaigning.
