She had fought at the Battle of Pondicherry in India, been wounded eleven times, and had a musket ball surgically removed from her groin without revealing her sex. After revealing her identity, she successfully petitioned for a military pension from the Royal Hospital Chelsea and became a celebrity, performing on stage in her military uniform.
