First Public Intersex Demonstration
Intersex activists Morgan Holmes and Max Beck of the Intersex Society of North America protested outside the American Academy of Pediatrics conference in Boston, carrying signs reading 'Hermaphrodites With Attitude' and denouncing non-consensual genital surgeries on intersex infants. This date was later commemorated as Intersex Awareness Day, formally established by Betsy Driver in 2004.
Intersex Awareness Day Formally Established
Betsy Driver formally established October 26 as Intersex Awareness Day, transforming the anniversary of the 1996 Boston protest into an annual international day of awareness. The day calls for an end to shame, secrecy, and unwanted cosmetic genital surgeries on intersex children, and has grown into a global annual observance.
