Intersex activists Morgan Holmes and Max Beck of the Intersex Society of North America protested outside the American Academy of Pediatrics conference in Boston, carrying signs reading 'Hermaphrodites With Attitude' and denouncing non-consensual genital surgeries on intersex infants. This date was later commemorated as Intersex Awareness Day, initiated by Betsy Driver and Emi Koyama in the early 2000s.
Impact & Significance
Launched the modern intersex rights movement, challenging the medical establishment's routine practice of non-consensual surgical interventions on intersex children.
