UN Special Rapporteur Condemns Non-Consensual Intersex Surgery

Juan E. Méndez, UN Special Rapporteur on torture, issued a report condemning non-consensual surgical interventions on intersex people as a form of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment. The report recommended deferring all non-trivial surgeries with irreversible consequences and called for criminal sanctions for medically unnecessary genital surgeries on intersex children.
