Yogyakarta Principles Plus 10 Add Intersex Protections

Legal International

A panel of 33 international human rights experts adopted the Yogyakarta Principles Plus 10, supplementing the 2006 Yogyakarta Principles. The YP+10 introduced 'sex characteristics' and 'gender expression' as new protected grounds and added principles on bodily integrity, truth, and legal recognition directly relevant to intersex rights — addressing criticism that the original Principles inadequately covered intersex issues.

Impact & Significance

Established the first comprehensive international human rights framework explicitly addressing intersex rights and bodily autonomy.
