Denmark Becomes First European Country to Allow Gender Self-Identification

Denmark amended the Civil Registration System Act allowing any citizen over 18 to change their legal gender by submitting a declaration followed by a six-month reflection period, with no medical certification, diagnosis, or surgical intervention required. In 2017, Denmark became the first country to officially remove transgender identities from its list of mental health disorders.

Impact & Significance

Pioneered gender self-identification in Europe, demonstrating that self-ID could work without the negative consequences feared by opponents — over 2,600 people had changed their gender by 2022 with no reported cases of fraud.
